• Provide professional development for teachers on how to teach Second Language Learners (SLLs). Teachers need to understand the unique challenges that SLLs face and the best practices for teaching them.
  • Create a welcoming and supportive environment for SLLs. This includes having a school policy that promotes cultural diversity and inclusion, and training staff on how to interact with SLLs and their families in a respectful and supportive way.
  • Provide SLLs with access to high-quality English language instruction. This may include providing SLLs with access to sheltered English instruction, bilingual instruction, or English language development (ELD) classes.
  • Offer SLLs support in all academic areas. This includes providing them with access to tutoring, after-school programs, and other resources to help them succeed academically.
  • Partner with families and communities to support SLLs. Schools should work with SLL families to understand their needs and to develop strategies to support their children’s learning at home.

Teachers

  • Build relationships with SLLs and their families. Getting to know SLLs and their families will help you to better understand their needs and to create a supportive learning environment for them.
  • Use a variety of teaching methods and strategies. SLLs learn in different ways, so it is important to use a variety of teaching methods and strategies to reach all learners.
  • Provide SLLs with opportunities to practice speaking, listening, reading, and writing in English. SLLs need to have opportunities to practice using English in all four language skills to develop their proficiency.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners. This includes providing SLLs with additional support and scaffolding when needed.
  • Use visuals and other non-linguistic cues to support SLLs’ learning. This can help SLLs to understand new concepts and vocabulary.
  • Create a positive and supportive classroom environment. SLLs need to feel comfortable and supported to learn effectively.
